Following the successful installation of Altec's first 32-point XY Scanner 3D on Line #1 at Alberta Plywood, a second 32-point system was installed on Line #2 in December 2004.  The new system replaced an outdated 5-point scanner on the existing Coe 790 charger.  Installation and start-up occurred over a regularly scheduled long-weekend in approximately 72 hours.  Again, thanks to all involved for such a successful installation and start-up.

The system included 32 laser sensors and integrated motion controllers for a complete drop-in replacement of the existing system.

Since the successful installation, the customer has reported increases in both recovery and production due to more accurate positioning of the bock and more accurate carriage retract positioning.  The new system is also faster due to the decreased calculation time and more accurate data.  In addition, there was a marked improvement in detecting and removing "tiny" blocks (i.e. blocks whose diameter is less that a preset minimum).  This is a particular benefit in high-speed, small block applications.
